When it comes to building green, bamboo is one of those easy-to-grow renewable materials that generally top the green building list.

It’s natural properties are what set it apart from other timber products being lightweight and having the weight-for-weight strength of mild steel. But bamboo is actually a grass which means it grows like it too, up to 30cm a day in the right conditions, and can be harvested without destroying the original plant.

Although bamboo is used in a wide range of products in Australia, Sanctuary Magazine reports that it’s not currently rated as a structural building material, but this could change.

These qualities make bamboo one of the world’s most sustainable building materials. So just how green is this grass?
