Satara was founded by Melbourne duo Andrew and Colleen Johnston. After successful corporate careers, they both wanted to put their passion for travel and design at the forefront of their lives. Intrepid travelers, they fossick the best pieces from around the world, always staying on top of global trends.
The company’s main distribution centre is in Melbourne. However, Satara now have trade representation and showrooms all over Australia – Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney – as well as a New Zealand showroom in Auckland.
Satara made a splash at the 2019 Decor + Design and the Australian International Furniture Fair in Melbourne, with a constant stream of trade visitors as well as a featured spot on the Scarlet Opus Trend Tours.
Scarlet Opus are respected UK Trend Futurists who travel the world forecasting trends. They spend months leading up to Australia’s No.1 Interiors Trade Event analysing the products of hundreds of exhibitors, then select an exclusive handful which sync with the macro trends for the coming year.
Satara’s contemporary collections were perfectly on point for the “Fellowship” and “Satori” trends. Fellowship emphasises craftsmanship and tribal elements, while Satori reflects a calming and natural rhythm with Japanese elements.
“Our new Noah range, made from recycled teak, with its rustic imperfect finish and black matt colors, hits the Satori trend mark perfectly,” says Andrew.
Satara’s Rain Collection
Trade visitors loved Satara’s Rain Collection, which is designed by the Italian maestro Gian Paolo Venier. Its curved lines and handwoven robes chime in with the Fellowship trend and is available in lounge, dining and bar furniture.
A Satara piece we love is the Amo Chair. Its frame features a combination of steam bending and carving techniques. It is an elegant juxtaposition slung with a comfortable custom-dyed canvas. A version is available where the arms feature Japanese-inspired Shou Sugi Ban elements of charred wood.

Satara’s cool aesthetic has led to some incredibly strong commercial and hospitality work in 2019, such as The Intercontinental Hayman Island, Eco Lodges in the Kimberley and the Portsea Hotel and new Portsea Life Saving Club.
