Judges of design contest The Edge, which took place at the recent Australian International Furniture Fair have hailed entrants for their innovation, sustainability and market-readiness.
The winners of The Edge contest were: The Edge Student Award - for the best new student product: Rowan Turnham's Short Black Connection Coffee Table, described by judges as a unique design with a refined finish, great residential use, offering tasteful use of materials and room for further development
The Edge Concept Award - for the best new prototype: Paphop Wongpanich's Star Table. Judges said the piece was a beautiful design with an impeccable finish, efficient use of beautiful materials, subtle design elements, elegantly resolved and ready for the market
The Edge Commercial Award - for the best new release: Paphop Wongpanich - 1974 Chair. This was "a very clever design", judges remarked, adding it was easy to transport, involved low energy consumption and was both efficient and practical.
The Edge Green Award - for the most sustainable new product across all entries went to Stuart Faulkner's Felix Stool; described by judges as beautiful and sustainable, a very efficient product using certified materials, which was also commercially viable and ready for the market
Also short-listed were: The Edge Student Award: Alex Zanda Lee - Lady Victoria Standard Lamp, Jacob Wong - Blossom Light, Mary Harrington - Frangipani Light; The Edge Concept Award: Andrew Simpson & Hugh Worthington - 42 Chair, James Hargraves - E-Rosen Bride Bench, Stuart Faulkner - Felix Stool; The Edge Commercial Award: David Pidcock - Filament Table, Ian Reid - Left Angel Chairs & Table, Marcus O'Reilly - Flotsam & Jetsam, Toby Horrocks - Freefold 02 Bookshelf The Edge Green Award: Alex Zanda Lee - Lady Victoria Standard Lamp, Marcus O'Reilly Flotsam & Jetsam, Rowan Turnham - Short Black Connection Coffee Table
