Ruby Star to shine in Sydney

5 November 2009

Indian textiles, furniture and homewares importer Ruby Star Traders has signed to take part in Decoration + Design for the first time early next year.

The Sydney based company hopes to capitalise on its presence at the trade fair - co-located with the Australian International Furniture Fair from 3-5 February 2010 at the Sydney Exhibition Centre - to source design focused clients, as founder Karin Gardiner confirmed.

"Our range is constantly evolving in terms of product mix and type of product. For the past few seasons we have moved heavily into unique furniture pieces and vintage one-off textiles. Many designers who have viewed our product recently have expressed surprise at the direction we have taken as they had us pigeon-holed as selling a completely different style range of products, so this is an important opportunity to show how we've evolved and where we're at now."

Founded in 1996, the company sources 90 percent of its ranges from India, with additional pieces purchased from Nepal, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. Gardiner travels to India throughout the year to cherry pick the company's product, while some ranges are also designed exclusively for Ruby Star, in line with current tastes and trends.

Gardiner said the company had a strong commitment to supporting traditional craft industries. "Purchasing in this way means we are helping local craftsmen to keep their skills alive, and helping create a steady source of income for families in these regions."

Signature products include furniture sourced from Rajasthan combining traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary styling. The company also specialises in bone inlay furniture specific to the Udaipur region of India.

Ruby Star Traders has wholesale showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
