Edge line up announced

19 November 2009

Successful entrants to one of industry's leading design awards programs have been officially unveiled. THE EDGE Design and Innovation Showcase at the Australian International Furniture Fair will feature the latest products by Australian and international furniture designers.

With designs presented in the categories of Commercial, Concept, Student & Green, EDGE 2010 curator Uli Hasel said the upcoming instalment had successfully built on previous years.

"Wow! THE EDGE 2010 just blows me away. We have never had so many designers and so many pieces in THE EDGE ever before - 56 designers including three international designers - from Thailand, Singapore and New Zealand - and 80 pieces of furniture will vie for the four awards we have reserved for them: THE EDGE Commercial for the best new release, THE EDGE Concept for the best new prototype, THE EDGE Student for the best new student work and THE EDGE Green Award for the most sustainable product across all nominated entries."

"There is something for everyone for the design conscious to the family home. Facets still feature strongly - they are the design signature of the early 21st century and we have seen them for the last 5-10 years. They developed through the use of computer aided design tools (CAD) where forms are stripped bare and stripped back to the most essential lines and planes. Students have also been working on new projects using rattan/cane and re-invented/re-created new products from old. This is a must see event for the industry."

Hasel described all entries as displaying a high design calibre, noting in particular: Shuffle Coffee Table by Adam Burns (Concept) - "I can see this as a great family coffee table, very versatile in use"; 42Chair by Vert Design (Commercial) - "I can just imagine a whole lot of them tumbling in a garden setting"; Spinne Chair by Ben Gumley (Concept) - "very elegant and refined, beautifully crafted"; Left Angel Chairs by Ian Reid (Commercial - pictured above left) - "with or without armrests around a complementing glass topped dining table...delicious"; E-Rosen Bridge Bench by James Hargraves - (Concept) - "a striking feature where art meets function, indoors or outdoors"; Blossom Light by Jacob Wong (Student - pictured above right) - "a delicate, uplifting pendant light"; Scalloped Seating by Nita Robson (Student) - " a beautiful low easy chair, where I could sit in my favourite cross-legged position"; 1974 Chair by Paphop Wongpanich (Commercial - pictured left) - "these funky, colourful and robust dining chairs would lift the mood of any family dining setting."

THE EDGE will take place as part of the Australian International Furniture Fair (AIFF) from 3-5 February 2010 at the Sydney Exhibition Centre.
